Why is it important to know the differences between common hair loss and irregular hair loss?
Identifying the differences between common and irregular hair loss helps better recommend client hair loss treatments.
Common hair loss
It is common to lose 50 tp 100 strands per day
Alopecia
The partial or complete loss of hair from where it typically grows.
Androgenic alopecia
hair loss characterized by terminal hair miniaturization and a shortened anagen phase. It can affect anyone and is caused by genetics,age or hormonal changes.
Male pattern hair loss
involves thinning and or baldness in a horseshoe shape
Female pattern hair loss
typically appears as a generalized (diffuse) thinning over the crown, top of head and temple areas
Alopecia areata
an autoimmune disorder. The immune system attacks the hair follicles, which leads to hair loss in round or irregular shaped patches. White blood cells stop hair growth during the anagen phase, which causes hair to enter the telogen phase
Alopecia Totalis
Advanced form of alopecia areata. the loss of all terminal scalp hair.
Alopecia Universalis
Advanced form of alopecia areata. the loss of terminal hair on the body and scalp.
Postpartum alopecia
Temporary hair loss after pregnancy. Temporary hair loss one to five months after delivery. Higher numbers enter the telogen stage which causes the hair loss. Typically the cycles regulate within 6 to 12 months.
There are two Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved products in the US proven to stimulate hair growth:
Minoxidil and Finasteride
Minoxidil
topical medication applied to the scalp. comes in two different strengths 2% and 5%. Rogaine is name brand.
Finasteride
oral medication. more effective and convenient to take than minoxidil. Negative side effects include: birth defects in male fetus therefore not prescribed for people with child bearing potential.

How can cosmetologist can assist clients with non medical options to counter hair loss including:

Androgens and thyroid hormones
these affect thinning hair. Androgens, including testosterone affect the dermal papilla and production of keratinocytes which leads to hair follicle miniaturization and and affects hair growth. Insufficient thyroid hormones and metabolic disorders may also cause hair thinning
