Hand Tools And Bench Work Flashcards
(33 cards)
What are the two categories of machine tool trade?
The two categories are:
* Machine tool operations
* and hand tools
What are operations are included in benchwork?
Benchwork includes operations of:
* Laying out
* Fitting
* and assembling
What are the two classes of hand tools?
The two classes of hand tool are:
* Cutting
* and non-cutting
What are non-cutting hand tools used for?
Non-cutting hand tools are used for holding, assembling or dismantling parts.
What are some examples of non-cutting hand tools?
Some examples of non-cutting hand tools are:
* Vices
* Screwdrivers
* Hammers
* Wrenches
* Pliers
What are cutting hand tools used for?
A cutting tool is a wedge-shaped, sharp-edged tool used to remove excess layers of material from a workpiece by cutting during machining to obtain the desired shape, size, and accuracy.
What are some examples of cutting hand tools?
Some examples of non-cutting hand tools are:
* Hacksaw
* Files
* Drills
* Reamer
* Fly-cutter
What is a bench vice and what is it used for?
A bench vice features two parallel jaws used to secure a small object securely for sawing, chipping, filing, polishing, drilling, reaming and tapping.
Some vices have a swivel base or solid base.
What is used to protect the workpiece in the vice?
Jaw caps made of brass, aluminium or copper are used to prtect the worpiece from being marred or damaged
What determines the size of a vice?
The size of a vice is determined by the width of the jaws
What is a ball-peen hammer and what is it used for?
A ball-peen or the machinist’s hammer, is a type of peening hammer used in metalworking. It has two heads, one flat and the other, called the peen which rounded. It is used in rivetting, bending and peening operations.
What sizes does the ball-peen hammer come in and what are they used for.
The ball pein hammer comes in sizes from a head mass of 2oz to 3oz. Smaller sizes are used for layout work and largers sizes are used for general work.
What precautions must be taken when using a hammer?
When using a hammer you should ensure that:
* The handle is solid and not cracked
* The head is tight on the handle and secured with proper wedge to keep expanded in the head
* The handle or your hands are not greasy
* To NEVER strike two hammer heads together
What is a Phillips screwdriver?
A Phillips screwdriver has a + shaped tip for use wih Phillips-type recessed screw heads.
A recessed head has a special indentation centered in its top surface.
What sizes can a Phillips-screwdriver be found in?
The Phillips-screwdriver can be found in the sizes:
* #1
* #2
* #3
* #4
These are to suit the various–sized recesses in heads of fasteners.
What precautions must be taken when using a Phillips-screwdriver?
When using a Phillips-screwdriver you should ensure that:
* You are using the correct screwdriver size for the fastener being worked on
* The screwdriver is held firmly in recess and square with screw.
How do you regrind a standard screwdriver blade?
- Make the sides of the blade slightly concave by holding side of blade tangential to the periphery of the grinding wheel. Ensure to grind an equal amount of material off of each side of the blade.
- The concave shae will allow the blade to maintain a better grip in the slot.
- Ensure to maintain the original taper, width and thickness of the tip and grind the end square with the centreline.
- Ensure to remove as little of the metal as possible.
- Ensure to quench the tip frequently in cold water.
What are the two types of open-ended wrenches?
The two types of double-ended wrenches are:
* Double-ended
* Single-ended
What is an open-ended wrench?
An open-ended wrench has flat jaws offset at an angle of 15 degrees which slide around nuts or bolt heads and levered for loosening or tightening.
Why are open-ended wrenches offset 15 degrees?
The wrench is offset 15 degress to allow the user to turn the nut or bolt in tight quarters by “flopping” the wrench.
Flopping is turning the wrench over so the other face is down each turn.
What is a double-ended wrench?
A double-ended wrench has an opening on each of the head.
What is a socket wrench and what is it used for?
A socket wrench or ratchet uses a reversible ratcheting mechanism which allows the user to pivot the tool back and forth to turn its socket instead of removing and repositioning a wrench to do so.
What are the two types of drives of socket wrenches?
The two types of drives of socket wrenches are:
* Ratchet
* Torque-wrench handles
What is a torque-wrench handle used for?
A torque-wrench handle is used when nuts or bolts must be tightened within certaain limits.
