What is an Advertorial?
A type of display advertisement that is created to look like an article within the publication, although most publications have the words “ advertisement” or “ paid advertisement” in tiny print somewhere nearby
What is Balance?
in news coverage, the concept of presenting sides equally or of reporting on a broad range of news events
What is a “ Beat” ?
A reporter’s specialized area of coverage based on geography or subject. Common beats in large newspapers include education, crime, and sports
What is Branding?
The process of creating in the consumer’s mind a clear identity for a particular company’s product, logo, or trademark
What is Citizen Journalism?
journalism done by amateurs or volunteers, either with citizen journalism websites , blogs, or as a part of a mainstream news organization website
What is Clear and Present Danger?
A restriction on speech when it meets both of the following conditions: 1) is it intended to incite or produce dangerous activity and 2) it is likely to succeed in achieving the purported result

The coming together of computing, telecommunications, and media in a digital environment

The practice of getting a domain name, usually of someone famous, with the intention of reselling the domain name at a high price

What is an Embargo?
The practice of sending news releases to new organizations with the stipulations that the information cannot be broadcast or printed until after a specific day or time
What is Fairness?
In news coverage, the concept of covering all relevant sides of an issue and allowing spokespeople representing those various sides a chance to be covered in the same way
What is Fourth Estate?
Another term for the press, or journalism, in which it acts as a fourth branch of the government; one that watches the other branches
What is a Genre?
A type of story that has recognizable and defined elements that distinguish it form other types of stories or nonfiction
What are Independent Films?
Films made by production companies outside the main Hollywood studios
What is Interpretive Reporting?
A type of reporting that tries to put the facts of a story into a broader context by relying on knowledge and experience that report has about the subject
What is a Lurker?
A person on an online discussion board who does not contribute to discussions by posting messages but who simply reads what others writen
What is a Medium?
A communication channel, such as talking on the phone, IM’ing or writing back and forth in a chat room
What is a Newshole?
A term typically used with newspapers to refer to the amount of total space available for advertisement space has blocked out
What is a Payola?
Cash or gifts given to radio disc jockeys by record labels in exchange for greater airplay given to the labels artists or most recent songs. It is now illegal
What is Product Placement?
The practice of advertisers paying for actual products to be used and shown prominently in television shows and movies
What is Public Opinion?
The notion that the public, as a group, can form shared views or ideas about topics and that these ideas guide the public’s actions
What are Pseudo Events?
An event that is created specifically to attract the attention of the media, particularly in the news
