What is a cadence?

A

A progression of two chords, found at the end of a musical phrase.

Perfect Cadence:

A
  • Uses chords V > 1
  • Sounds complete and always stops on the tonic chord. Both chords are major.

Imperfect Cadence:

A
  • Lands on chord V e.g 1 > V or II > V.
  • Sounds incomplete. The 2nd chord is always chord V of the key, which is major. The 1st chord can be major or minor.

Plagal Cadence:

A
  • Uses chords IV > I
  • Sounds complete and finishes on chord 1. Both chords are major.
  • Known as the ‘amen’ cadence is it is often found at the end of hymns.

Interrupted Cadence:

A
  • Uses Chords V > V1
  • Sounds incomplete. In a major key, it involves a major chord moving to a minor chord.
  • Known as the ‘surprise’ cadence, because the chord doesn’t revolve to 1.
