Hass revision Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is a desert
A large area of the Earth that is home to similar plants and animal communities that are adapted to that particular environment
Spices
Space, Place, Interconnection, Chance, Enviroment, Scale
Spacial Distribution
A distribution or set of geographic observations representing the values of the behavior of a particular phenomenon or characteristic across many locations on the surface of the Earth.
Climate
Long term average weather conditions calculated over a long period of time
Latitude
The measurement of distance north or south of the equator
Longitude
The measurement east or west from the Prime Meridian
High latitude temps (biome example)
Cold
Receives the least sunshine creating cold climate
Polar lands
Arctic Tundra
Mid latitudes, temps and example
Hot
Deserts
low latitudes
Tropical Forest
Direct sunlight
on equator
humid
Tropical Forest
Humid Near equator Deforestation Stable climate Half of plants n animals live there
Grassland
shrubs and grass
food and fibre comes from plants n animals there
Tundra
Arctic Tundra Treeless plain Cold, dry High latitudes few nutrients to support animals and plants
Permafrost
permanently frozen ground
Rainforests impact on world
drugs used come from rain forests
plants take in carbon dioxide and produces oxygen, amazon produces half the worlds oxygen
LAPDOM
Latitude, Alitude, Prevailing winds, Distance from the ocean, Ocean currents, Mountain barrier
Altitude
The higher the altitude the colder the temp
6 degrees lower every 1000 meters
Prevailing winds
Most frequent wind direction
Distance from the ocean
Oceans heat up and cool down much more slowly than land
Ocean currents
directed movement of sea water generated by a number of forces acting upon the water
Mountain barriers
Highland areas increase rainfall by forcing air to rise as wind blows our mountain, as air rises it cools to the point of condensation, producing rain
