The UN is an international organisation formed in 1945 after WWII by 51 countries committed to a better peaceful society with no future wars.

The United Nations has defined a broad range of internationally accepted rights, including civil, cultural, economic, political, legal and social rights. To hold nations accountable in order to protect these rights.
Define Human rights
Human rights is an entitlement that all human beings, posses regardless of their nationality, age, gender or place of living.
What does the General Assembly body do in the UN
It’s role is to be the main deliberative, policy making through friendly cooperation between nations in New York.
What does the Security Council body do in the UN
Maintain world peace and has the ‘Power of Vito where if 1 person or nation votes no it all fails’. This council consists of 15 members (5 permanent and 10 rotating.)
What does the Economic and Social Council body do in the UN
This council is mainly about the coordination policy review, policy dialogue and recommending on economic and social issues.
What does the Trusteeship Council body do in the UN
NO LONGER IN ACTION! The Trusteeship Council suspended its operations on 1 November 1994
What does the International Court of Justice body do in the UN
It’s role is to settle in accordance with international law. It’s seat is at the Peace palace in Hague, Netherlands.
What does the UN Secretariat body do in the UN
This comprises the Secretary General who cary out day to day work like organising activities and coordination alongside thousands of UN Staff members
6 Types of human rights and meaning
Civil -> Right to life and liberty.
Social -> Allows human to fulfill potential.
Economic -> Enables survival through wealth of currency
Cultural -> Preserve identity and heritage.
Political -> Enable participation in Gov.
Legal -> Protection against arbitrary justice.
How Human Rights are Protected in Australia Constitutional:
FF gave us rights in the constitution. Eg, right to vote and freedom of religion
How Human Rights are Protected in Australia Statute law:
Since 1970s, parliament has passed through bills to create new law to protect our human rights. Eg, 1975 Racial Discrimination Act.
How Human Rights are Protected in Australia Common law:
Australia has inherited common law traditions through Judges. Eg, 1992 Mabo Case.
How Human Rights are Protected in Australia International law/treaties:
Through ratification which makes the convention binding into Australian Law. Being a signatory is like an acknowledgement. Eg, Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
