Flashcards in Head and Neck - Face Deck (23):
1

Where do the muscles of facial expression lie?

They lie within the superficial fascia of the face (and neck)

2

Where is the superficial fascia in terms of the scalp?

connective tissue layer (2nd layer)

3

What are the key muscles of facial expression?

Frontal body of occipitofrontalis, occipital body of occipitofrontalis, buccinator, master, platysma, orbicularis oris, orbicularis oculi

4

What nerve supplies the muscles of facial expression?

The terminal branches of the facial nerve (Cr N VII)

5

What fibres do the facial nerve contain?

Motor and special sensory and parasympathetic fibres

6

Where does the facial nerve emerge from?

From the stylomastoid foramen

7

What gland would you be able to see on the side of the face of a half head model?

Parotid gland

8

Does the facial nerve enter the substance of the parotid gland?

Yes and it is here where it splits into its terminal branches

9

How many pairs of salivary glands are there?

3

10

What is the largest of the 3 pairs of salivary glands?

Parotid gland

11

What are the names of the 3 pairs of salivary glands?

Parotid, sublingual and submandibular

12

What is the parotid gland bounded by?

Superiorly: zygomatic arch
Inferiorly: superior border of mandible/angle of mandible
Anteriorly: masseter muscle
Posteriorly: external ear and SCM

13

Where does the long base of the parotid gland overlie?

The anterior border of the SCM

14

Where does the parotid gland extend superiorly?

Zygomatic arch

15

Where does the parotid gland extend inferiorly?

Angle of mandible

16

Where does the apex of the parotid gland lie?

It lies over the masseter

17

Where does the parotid gland extend posteriorly?

It extends to just anterior to the external auditory meatus

18

What type of gland is the parotid gland?

Exocrine gland

19

How do the 2 types of glands (exocrine and endocrine) differ?

Endocrine secrete their products directly into bloodstream
Exocrine secrete their products through ducts

20

Where does the parotid duct run?

Forward, superficial to the master muscle and then pierces the buccinator muscle to open into the oral cavity

21

Opposite which upper tooth does the parotid duct open into in the oral cavity?

2nd maxillary molar tooth

22

What artery enters the parotid gland to give off its terminal branches?

ECA

23

What vein leaves the parotid gland?

Retromandibular vein
