What are the actions of the SCM?
Unilat: lat flexion of neck to the same side
Rotate head to opposite side
Bilat: Neck flexion
Assist to elevate ribs during inhalation
Where does the SCM originate?
Sternal Head: Top of manubrium
Clavicular Head: Medial 1/3 of clavicle
Where does the SCM insert?
- Mastoid process of temporal bone
- Lat portion of superior nuchal line of occiput
Actions of ALL scalenes
- Unilat: With ribs fixed, laterally flex the head and neck to same side
- Rotate head and neck to opposite side
- Bilat: Elevate ribs during inhalation
Flex the head and neck
Where does the Anterior Scalene originate?
Transverse processes of C3-C6
Where does the Anterior scalenes insert?
First rib
Where do the Middle Scalenes originate?
Transverse processes of C2-C7
Where do middle scalenes insert?
First rib
Where do the posterior scalenes originate

Where do the posterior scalenes insert?
Second Rib

- Elevate the mandible
- May assist to protract the mandible

- Elevate mandible
