mental illness
Patterns of thinking or behavior, that cause a person significant emotional pain or prevents normal functioning.
Biopsychosocial model
holds that physical illness is caused by a complex interaction of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors
Health psychology:
seeks to determine the importance of psychological factors in illness
stress
any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one’s well being and that thereby tax one’s coping ability.

Responding to Stress Physiologically
Primary Path: Stress causes the hypothalamus to activate the sympathetic part of the ANS (main part are the adrenal glands which release catecholamine to cause the F-F response)
Secondary Path: the hypothalamus causes the pituitary gland to activate the adrenal glands which secrete corticosteroids to increase energy and reduce inflammation
public health
the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting human health through organized efforts and informed choices of society
virus
smallest, multiply only after entering a living cell, takes over the cell’s reproductive mechanisms, resulting in cell damage or death
parasite
an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host’s expense.

simple, single-celled microorganisms. Bacteria live in air, soil, food, and in and on the bodies of plants and animals. Give out TOXINS

A disease caused by an organism or virus that enters and multiplies within the human body.
Symptoms: Fever or chills Loss of appetite Fatigue.

simple substances found in the environment that are essential to the body’s functioning.
