Q

Explain how blood cholesterol contributes to the risk of cardiovascular disease

A

Blood cholesterol becomes a health issue when there is too much of it in the blood. High blood cholesterol levels, particularly LDLs are one of the three risk factors for heart disease (the other two are tobacco smoking and high blood pressure). The liver is where the processing of cholesterol occurs. When saturated fats are consumed, the cholesterol that is not processed by the liver is returned to the bloodstream. If there is too much of LDL cholesterol in the blood, it can build up into fatty deposits on the arterial walls. This build-up of fatty deposit causes a narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), which may eventually become blocked and cause a heart attack or stroke.

Q

Explain how blood pressure contributes to the risk of cardiovascular disease

A

Blood pressure can increase with exercise or exertion. Elevated blood pressure is a concern when the pressure remains high while at rest because the heart is being overworked and the arteries have increased stress on the arterial walls. This can accelerate the depositing of fatty plaques on the arterial walls, a condition called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis contributes to other illnesses such as coronary heart disease and stroke.

Q

What is burden of disease?

A

Burden of disease is a health indicator which combines mortality data with morbidity data so that conditions that contribute differently to illness and death can be compared. Measured in DALY—disabiity adjusted life year.

Q

what is determinant?

A

Determiants refers to the factors that raise or lower the levels of health in an individual or population. Determnants of health expain or predict health in trends and why some groups have better or worse health than others.

Q

What is morbidity?

A

Morbidity refers to ill-health–including disability, injury and disease–in an individual and the level of ill-health in a population. So the mobidity rate refers to the rate of ill-health in a population in a given period of time.
