What is nicotine?
An addictive stimulant drug. Nicotine increases the heart rate and blood pressure and makes blood vessels narrower than normal. This can lead to heart disease.
What is tar?
A sticky brown substance that is deposited in the lungs. It damages the alveoli which affects gas exchange. It is a carcinogen (causes cancer).
What is carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide is a gas that takes the place of oxygen in red blood cells. This reduces the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry. It means that the circulatory system has too work harder, causing heart disease.
What is a drug?
A drug is a chemical that changes the way your body or brain works. Drugs may alter your behaviour as well as your metabolism.
What are the groups of drugs?
. Pain killers . Hallucinogens . Stimulants . Depressants . Performance enhancers
What do carbohydrates give us?
It gives us energy
What do proteins give us?
Growth and it repairs are body tissues
What do vitamins give us?
Healthy skin, teeth and bones
What does water give us?
Hydration of the body
What do minerals (calcium) give us?
Strong bones
