Q

In general the employer how should it be ensured that there are safe working practises implanted into the working space in regards to safety and overall health

A

Training
The employees should be trained in the safe use of work of machinery and equipment to carry out safely
They can be done in house or with certification

Machine maintained and guarding
All machines should be maintained and inspected regularly
Machines should also have the correct guards to protect employees e.g blade covers

Extraction systems
An extraction system should be implemented to reduce hazards from dust fumes and timber dust
- they should be maintained regularly 12-14 months

PPE
Employers should also ensure that ppe is available this includes things for eye protection or make for fumes

Accident reporting
Keep a record of any accidents with RIDDOR (reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulation ) to HSE and covers all types of injury

Q

What are the eight principles to consider under COSHH?

A

Plan and carry out activities to reduce the spread of emissions and substances hazardous to health
Consider all relevant routes of exposure e.g. skin absorption of inhalation
Control exposure by measuring the most effective route and minimise the spread of substances
Provide suitable PPE
Check regularly control measures for their effectiveness
Inform and train all employers on hazards and the risks
Ensure control measures does not increase the chance of spreading of hazardous substances

Q

What are safe working practises (in school, college and industry)? How can they be implemented? Give a set of guidelines which may be followed to ensure safe working practices:

A

They all serve to keep the people doing work or people in vicinity safe - and can include a set of guidelines for people in the workspace to follow

They can be implemented in various ways one may include safe walking paths ‘safe zones’ where machinery is kept away for these areas and people are able to freely work in those areas without a risk to potential harm
Forklifts and trucks may have sound recordings for reversing and large fitting lamps with a signal light to represent itself in the area
Job rotations may also be made to reduce the chance of a worker gaining RSI - repetitive strain injury due to the same movement in one job. They could also get boredom from this as well

PPE must be worn when using machinery
All guards and safety measures should be utilitilised when using machinery
Work areas such be kept clean and free from hazards. Spillages
All students should be aware of the fire evacuation routes and emergency phone numbers

Q

What is a risk assessment? Does it have to help prevent all types of risk? What are the conditions needed for one to conduct a risk assessment? What is a risk? What is a Hazard?

A

Is an assessment made to conduct any potential hazards in the working vicinity and any means possible of preventing that harm.

Not all risks have to be solved by law but the employer must take reasonable action to minimise most of the potential hazards

In a working vicinity where there are five or more employees working

A hazrad is something that could cause harm
A risk is the chance of the hazard causing someone harm or being exposed to it

Q

How is a risk assessment conducted?

A

Identify the hazard - Can be done by walking around the work space and identifying where you may think it if from
Identify who might be harmed and the nature of the harm - including the worker and people visiting the workplace
Evaluate the risk and decide not he control measure - after the hazard is identified the hazard should be ranked on how potentially dangerous it is and how to remove/lessen the level of risk
Record finding and the implemented actions for the hazard - a documentation should be kept of all the risk assessments made and the people identified at risk
Review the risk assessment - after a period of time they should be regularly reviewed and should identify if the risk remains the same or if there have been any changes so far

Dealing with the safety aspect of toys from flammability to toxicity nd the potential of trapping clothes or injuring children physically.
- toys made for children under 36 months must not be a choking hazard - one way to test this is with a test tube the size of a child’s throat and placing the toy within the cylinder which can then be used to identify any potential risk worthy products

Q

What must toy manufactures meet when producing children products and toys:

A

Make sure that the product has been designed and manufactured to comply with the essential safe
Carry out an safety assessment of the product
Demonstrate that an applicable conformity assessment procedure has been followed and affix the CE marking
Make sure that the toy id accompanied by the instructions for safe use and safety information where appropriate
Investigate and record any complaint made in relation to the toy and keep a register of complaints non-complaint toys and recalled toys

17
Q

What is advice hat consumers should have when looking for products?

A

Looking for the BSI kitemark proves that the product os fit for purpose and safe to use and has taken steps to ensure that the product is safe for the populations which means many of their other products re also safe

Manufacturers provide safety warnings and health and safety instruction manuals to help advise consumers of any potential risks and inform them of safety precautions

They also help have to inform consumers of how to care for the product and how to dispose the product of its life time has ended

18
Q

What is the consumer protection act 1987?
How does the act aim to protect consumers?

A

Designed to safeguard consumers from products that don’t reach reasonable safety and give them rights when buying goods and services

Product liability: if defective an causes injury the manufacturer would be held responsible
General safety: requirements: all goods for domestic be must be reasonably safe any product deemed unsafe may be removed from the sale for up to six months while safety checks are made and carried out if faulty it should be destroyed
Price indications: it prohibits seller giving consumers a misleading price indication e.g. in advertisements - enforced by trading officers who can seize goods and business records if they are suspect to being misleading

19
Q

If products are not safe the consumer may be hurt and is in risk of injury
What should the manufacturer do to ensure this doesn’t happen?

A

Warn consumers about potential risks
Provide information to help consumers understand the ricks
Monitor the safety of products
Take action if a safety problem is found

They can be provided in information booklets about health and safety etc with any risks and information the consumer should know

  • if a faulty item is found in the product the manufacturer has a duty to call it in for repair
They could also do ‘product recall’ - when the dame fault is found in several models of the same product
