Isotonic exercise
Dynamic exercises like running, walking, and swimming involve muscles shortening to produce muscle contraction and active movement.
Isometric exercise
Static or setting exercises in which muscles contract without moving the joint.
Useful for strengthening abdominal, gluteal, and quadriceps muscles.
Isokinetic exercise
Resistive exercises involve muscle contraction or tension against resistance.
Used in physical conditioning and to build up certain muscle groups, such as the pectoral muscles.
Aerobic exercise
Exercise in which the amount of oxygen taken into the body is greater than that used to perform the activity.
Used to improve cardiovascular conditioning and physical fitness.
Anaerobic exercise
Exercise, such as weight lifting and sprinting, in which the muscles cannot draw enough oxygen from the bloodstream, and anaerobic pathways are used to provide additional energy for a short time.
Factors affecting sleep
Emotional stress, Environment
Stimulants and alcohol, Diet, Smoking, Medications
Motivation for alertness and boredom
Pain, illness, injury.
Which should the nurse include in a health promotion program as the ideal amount of weekly exercise for a group of older adults aged 70 plus?
150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activities
When considering the sleep needs of a teenager versus an adult, the nurse needs to remember which differences can impact sleep needs.
-Older adults go to bed earlier and wake up earlier, and adolescents tend to go to sleep later and wake up later.
-Adolescents require, on average, 8–10 hours of sleep, versus older adults who require, on average, 7–8 hours.
