Heart Test - Anatomy of the Circulatory System Flashcards
(27 cards)
How many chambers does the heart have?
4
What are the top 2 chambers called?
atria (plural for atrium)
What do the atria do?
They receive blood from the parts of the body outside of the heart.
What do the ventricles do?
They p[ump blood to parts of the body outside of the heart.
What does the right ventricle do?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What does the left ventricle do?
pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
Arteries
blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood (except for the pulmonary artery) away from the heart
Veins
blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood (except for the pulmonary vein) towards the heart
Capillaries
microscopic blood vessels that connect arteries and veins and carries out the process of diffusion
Arterioles
small arteries leading from larger arteries to capillaries
Venules
small veins leading from capillaries to larger veins
Aorta
the largest artery connected to the left ventricle
What is the descending aorta?
It’s the part of the aorta that carries blood to the lower body
Vena Cava
the largest vein connected to the right atrium
What does the superior part of the vena cava do?
It brings blood back to the heart from the parts of the body above the heart (head and arms)
what does the inferior part of the vena cava do?
brings blood back to the heart from parts of the body below the heart (organs and legs)
Pulmonary
lung
Pulmonary Artery
carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
Pulmonary Vein
carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
Carotoid Artery
major artery in the neck; it carries blood from the aorta to the head
Jugular Vein
major vein in the neck; carries blood from the head to the superior vena cava
Brachial Artery
major artery in the arm; carries blood from the aorta to the arm and hand
Brachial Vein
major vein in the arm; carries blood from the hand and arm to the superior vena cava
Femoral Artery
major artery in the leg; carries blood from the descending aorta to the leg and foot
