Heat and temprature Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is temperature
The temperature of an object is a measure of the hotness of that object
Thermometric properties
Thermometric property is any physical property that changes measurably with a change in hotness
Disagreement between thermometers
The problem arises because different thermometric properties do not change proportionally with change in hotness
What are three methods of heat transfer
- Convection
- Radiation
- Conduction
What is convection
Convection is the transfer of heat through a fluid by means of circulating currents of fluid caused by the heat
What is Radiation
Radiation is the transfer of heat energy from one place to another in the form of electromagnetic waves
What is Conduction
Conduction is the movement of heat energy through a substance by the passing on of molecular vibration from molecule to molecule, without any overall movement of the substance
What is U value
U value is a measure of the heat flow through 1m^2 of material each second when a temperature difference of 1K exists between the two sides
What is specific heat capacity
specific heat capacity of a substantce is the change in heat energy associated with one kilogram of a substance heating up or cooling down by one kelvin
Unit is specific heat capacity
symbol is c and the unit is joule per kilogram per kelvin (J kg^-1 K^-1)
Change in heat formula
(specific heat capacity)(mass)(change in temperature)
What is heat capacity
The heat capacity of a substance is the heat energy needed to change the temperature of the substance by one kelvin
unit of heat capacity
Symbol is C and unit is joule per kelvin
What is heat pump
The heat pump is a device that extracts available heat from cold area and transfers it to warmer area
The temperature
the temperature of an object is a measure of the hotness of that object
