Waves Flashcards
(9 cards)
The Doppler effect
The Doppler effect is the apparent change in the frequency of a wave due to the relative motion between the source of the wave and the observer.
What is a wave
a wave is a means of transferring energy by oscillations from one place to another.
What are transverse
A transverse wave is a wave where the direction of oscillation is perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels.
What is longitudinal wave
A longitudinal wave is a wave where the direction of oscillation is parallel to the direction in which the wave travels.
4 Characteristics of a wave
Reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference
Stationary (standing) waves
formed when two periodic waves of the same frequency and amplitude travelling in opposite directions meet.
Natural frequency
The natural frequency of an object is the frequency at which the object will vibrate if free to do so.
Resonance
Resonance is the transfer of energy so that a body vibrates at its natural frequency.
Sound intensity
Sound intensity is defined as power per unit area.
