A

Perkin Warbeck was a pretender to the throne, claiming to be Richard Duke of York.
In reality he was a cloth merchant.

A

Warbeck impersonated Richard Duke of York, one of the Princes in the Tower. Henry had no idea if the princes were dead or alive therefore he had no way of proving Warbeck as a pretender.

A

In 1497 James IV of Scotland signed the Truce of Ayton with England. Growing tired of Warbeck and seeing no political importance to him - James advises him to try and hijack the second cornish rebellion.
Warbeck is captured during the failed rebellion after fleeing and deserting his troops.

A

By pretending to be Richard Duke of York Warbeck had a much stronger claim than Henry to the throne.

  1. Henry’s treatment of the nobility meant that he had spoiled his relationships with them.
  2. William Stanley had never been rewarded for his loyalty, and therefore supported Warbeck. This was troubling as William Stanley was one of Henry’s closest advisors and also his step-uncle.
  3. Warbeck had also promised to lower taxes and end wars with Scotland which was an attractive poliicy to many of Henry’s people.
