Why were good reations with Burgundy important?

A

The Bulk of England’s exports went through parts of the Netherlands which came under Burgundy’s juridstriction.
England’s main source of income/ industry was the cloth trade which mainly involved Antwerp.
Commercial interests meant good relations were important.

  • Margaret Burgundy was a leading proponent of the Yorkist Cause
  • The Burgundians gave refuge to Perkin Warbeck in 1493.
  • Henry wrote a letter of irritation to Philip over Margaret’s support for Warbeck but Philip ignored it.

This brings two of Henry’s aims into conflict - promote prosperity and dynastic security.
Henry sacrificed english prosperity and the commercial interests of London and East-Coast merchants.
