A

Henry’s power in Ireland only extended as far as ‘The Pale.’ Power in the rest of Ireland lay with the descendants of the Anglo-Norman Barons who had settled there in the 12th Century.

A

Henry attempted to end Irish autocracy, he decided to rule the Pale through an englishman, backed by an armed force.
* Henry appointed his infant son, Henry, as Leuitenant of Ireland and appointed Sir.Edward Poynings as his deputy.

What was the Poyning’s law?

A

After the introduction of Edward Poynings as the deputy of Ireland, Parliament passed the Poyning’s law that made it so Irish Parliament couldn’t pass laws without the English Crown’s approval.

How successful was Edward Poynings?

A

He was initially successful in enforcing royal authority through force and bribes.
–> However, the Poyning’s strategy was too expensive for Henry’s liking, ttherefore Poynings was recalled and Kildare was made deputy once again.

How did the Irish situation resolve?

A

By 1496, Kildare decided that there was no real benefit in supporting the Yorkist cause. Henry allowed him to rebuild his family’s fortunes, thus making Kildare a loyal servant.
