What was the royal court?
Centre of government since medieval times.
Valued magnificence and wealth.
Followed the king around
What were the three positions in the royal court?
Household, chamber and privy chamber
What was the role of the household in the royal courts?
Maids and waiters, watched over by Lord Steward. Looked after kings and guests
What was the role of the Chamber in the Royal Court?
Political matters. Led by Lord Chamberlain (was William Stanley before 1495)
What was the Privy chamber?
A new room added after the betrayal of William Stanley 1495. More private, more difficult to regain kings trust and get close to him as it is more private

How did the Royal Council work?
No clear rules. Permanent body with different groups for different areas

Main offshoot of the council, developed from the second half of Henry VII reign.
Focused on kings ‘rights’ to revenue, making bonds and recognisances to trap the nobility.

Not central in government and only met occasionally
What were the two main functions of parliament?
Pass laws, grant taxation

Passed lots of Acts of Attainder, lots of money for wars

Main use of tax where u pay 10 or 15 % of what your earn. Paid by towns and boroughs
What was the Justices of the peace?
Keep law and order in regional/local areas.
Used to be mainly nobility but king doesn’t trust them so mainly royal officials or local gentry.
