When was The Brittany Crisis?
1487-1492
How was France becoming more powerful?
It was being temporarily rules by Anne of Beaujeau was trying to marry her brother Charles VIII (King of France) to Anne of Brittany which would give France control of almost the entire coastline.
Why would France owning Brittany be a problem for Henry?
He believed it would make it easier for France to invade England or disrupt their trade.
Why and when did the Brittany Crisis deepen?
When the French defeated the Breton allied forces at St Aubin du Corbier on 28th July 1488.
Then on 9th September, Francis died and Anne of Beaujeau took over the wardship of Anne of Brittany - French control was almost complete.
What was the Treaty of Redon and when was it signed?
Treaty with Brittany signed in February 1489, Henry agreed to send 6000 troops (only sent 3000) and in return Anne pledged to pay for the English troops and not to marry or form alliances without Henry’s consent.
What was the Treaty of Dordrecht and when was it signed?
Treaty with Maximillian (heir to the HRE) signed in February 1489, Henry agreed to send 3000 troops to help Maximillian’s army who was under siege from Flemish and French forces.
How was Henry betrayed with the Treaty of Dordrecht?
Maximillian didn’t hold up his end of the deal and didn’t send troops to help Henry in Brittany. Instead Maximillian made peace with France.

Treaty with Spain signed March 1489, Henry and Spain joined forces and agreed to go to war with France in order to help Henry regain territory.

Arrangement of marriage between Catherine of Aragon to Arthur Tudor when they came of age.

Spain became drawn into another war in Grenada and withdrew their forces in Brittany.

Brittany was lost but France was now closed to Yorkists which was a more tangible benefit to Henry.

What caused the Castilian Succession Crisis?
Crisis caused when Isabella of Castile (Queen of Spain) died (1504) so without his wife, Ferdinand had no right to rule Castile without her so it now belonged to his eldest daughter Joanna who was married to Philip of Burgundy.
Castile went from being owned by Spain to being part of the HRE overnight.
Who did the Castilian Succession Crisis lead to a war between?
Ferdinand and Philip
Why was a war between Ferdinand and Philip a problem for Henry?
He had an alliance with both of them and was stuck in the middle.
Why did Ferdinand unite Spain and France?
He knew Henry wouldn’t go against Burgundy due to their cloth trade depending on them.
Why was France and Spain uniting a problem for Henry?
His ally Spain was now in an alliance with his enemy France.
What was the Magnus Intercursus?
An agreement for better trading terms between England and Burgundy and forcing Philip to give up Edmund de la Pole (Earl of Suffolk and Yorkist threat).

Philip suddenly died in September 1506 and Ferdinand took over control of Castile again.
