what was the Court of Chancery?
A
- for fair justice
- dealt with problems such as enclosure, contracts and inherited land from wills

- became too popular
- justice was slow since court clogged up with too many cases

- headed by Wolsey (his biggest achievment)
- extended its up for cheap and fair justice
- dealt with cases of people dominant in their localities as JPs were scared to prosecute
- encourage use for private lawsuits

- Wolsey had to set up a series of ‘overflow tribunals’ so justice was slow

- Wolsey changed way subsidies were collected
- taxpayers’ wealth used to be assessed by local commissioner (could be biased) but changed to national committee
- made wealth assessments more accurate and realistic

- Wolsey pushed for a reduction in royal household expenditure
- led to reduction of Gentlemen of the Chamber
- Wolsey replaced Groom of the Stool with one of his own supporters
