Describe the On The Roof Gang:

A

176 enlisted radio operators, (150 Navy/26 Marines), were specially trained at a unique school located on the roof of the old Navy Department Building from 1928-1941. They were trained to intercept and analyze foreign radio communications.

Describe Code Purple:

A

Army cryptanalysts nicknamed the “Type B Machine” PURPLE. 1940, Genevieve Grotjan discovered a pattern in intercepted messages that allowed the Navy to build a “PURPLE” analog machine to decode the Japanese diplomatic messages. The Navy has referred to the system as the “B MACHINE” but adopted the Army’s nomenclature, PURPLE.

Describe the attack on USS Pueblo:

A

January 1968, while in international waters North Koreans attacked the Pueblo. North Koreans boarded the ship and captured it. 82 crewmen were held for 11 months before being released. Largest single loss of sensitive material. Large amount of cryptologic and classified documents and equipment compromised. Led to end of ship born reconnaissance program.

A

Also known as Station X, during World War II it was the site of the United Kingdom’s main decryption establishment. Provided crucial assistance to the Allied war effort and shortened the war by 2 years.

Describe the Navajo Code Talkers:

A

Took part in every assault the US Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942-1945. They served in all six Marine Divisions. The idea to use Navajo for secure communications came from Philip Johnston and became a code that withstood all attempts to decipher it.

Describe the attack on the USS Stark:

A

The frigate did not detect the missiles with radar and warning was given by the lookout only moments before the missiles struck. No weapons were fired in the defense of the Stark. 3 by 4 meter gash, 37 killed, 21 injured.

A

Written by “Blue Ribbon Recruit Training Panel” in 1993 with support from CNO Admiral Kelso. In 1994, the word “bluejacket” was changed to “Navy” with support from CNO Admiral Boorda. In 1997, “my superiors” was changed to “those appointed over me”.
