Epigastric hernia (umbilicus and chest)
most common groin hernia
Left inguinal hernia
colicky abdominal pain, n/v, have abdominal distention, tympany hyperperistalsis, fever
Strangulated hernia
-Bulging or swelling localized in the groin or scrotum
-Dull ache lower abdomen or groin
- Swelling of the labia majora in females
-Bowel obstruction may be present if incarcerated

prompt elective surgery due to high incidence of strangulation
Assess hernia
BD + VM
- Have the patient lie supine lift their head from exam table and
bear down to tense the abdomen - Have the patient perform Valsalva’s maneuver while standing -Note a bulge during the maneuver

Where should you monitor in the testes
Belt for reducible hernia
risk of atrophy of the spermatic cord or fusion to hernial sac

Herniorrhaphy (repair of hernia)
Open or closed surgical procedure May require mesh
