1
Q

What is the purpose of a normal Disc between bones

A

cushioning between bones and allows for full mobility

2
Q

What are 5 examples of Disc problems

A

Degenerated Disc

bulging disc

herniated disc

thinning disc

disc degeneration with osteophyte formation

3
Q

What is a degenerated disc

A

When the fibrocartilage between vertebrae begin to breakdown creating a bone on bone contact.

4
Q

What is a bulging disc

A

when the fibrocartilage of vertebrae create a buldge protruding out of the disc

5
Q

What is a herniated disc

A

when the inner portion of the disc pushes through the outer fibrocartilage creating a hernia

6
Q

what is thinning disc

A

where the fibrocartilage becomes thin between vertebrae

7
Q

what is disc degeneration with osetophyte formation

A

Where the disc degenerates and then osteophytes or bony spurs form creating bone on bone contact

8
Q

What is the name of the process located at Cervical 7

A

Spinous process

9
Q

What 3 studies do we use to diagnose herniated disks

A

MRI

CT Scan

Myelogram

10
Q

What is a consequence of herniation

A

Nerve root compression which causes the source of the pain

11
Q

What care can be performed in a patient with suspected disk herniation (7)

A

Brace, corset, belt

Local heat/ ice

Massage

Traction

TENS

NSAIDs, Short Term narcotics, muscle relaxants

Back strengthening exercises

12
Q

What is a TENS unit

A

Trans-electrical nerve stimulator

electrodes placed on site of pain and stimulation provides relief.

13
Q

What is a laminectomy

A

excision of lamina (posterior arch of vertebra) to gain access to protruding disk to remove it

14
Q

diskectomy: Micro-surgical diskectomy

A

decompresses the nerve root

15
Q

spinal fusion

A

add bone graft/synthetic product for stabilization. Keeps bone off bone

16
Q

What is the Post-OP management of spinal surgery

A

Lie flat

log roll patient

Pain Management

Risk for CSF leak

peripheral neurovascular checks

avoid sitting/standing for long periods

avoid twisting

17
Q

What do we look for in a CSF leak

A

c/o H/A

Clear/light yellow drainage

18
Q

T/F Spinal fusion may have a longer recovery

A

true

19
Q

what else do we need to monitor in a spinal fusion recovery

A

donor site

20
Q

Teaching post op spinal surgery

A

think through body movements (ex. getting in and out of car)
