Heterogeniety in ageing Flashcards
(3 cards)
Increasing heterogeniety
Stereotype is to say all old people are the same, but heterogeniety increases in;
- Biological variables (brain atrophy, way you walk)
- Cognitive functions (memory)
- Psychological (personality, self esteem)
measuring heterogenity
SD/mean x 100 = the percentage of the mean. The higher the percentage, the more heterogeneous
EG in a very large study on the WAIS test, the heterogeniety increased from 14-27% at 16 yrs to 32-82% in 85+ yrs.(more on some tests than others, most in picture arrangement)
Bio age
Not your chronological but the state of your body/DNA.
Older people show more variance of bio age when in the same chrono age. (in 85 + there were still max scores on self-reported health)
Higher bio age than chrono age is associated with higher mortality rate.
