Hindlimb Flashcards
(27 cards)
What are the parent veins within the hindlimb?
Caudal vena cava
What arteries are present in the hindlimb?
Aorta Femoral vein Popliteus vein* Saphenous vein (cr. and cd.) Cranial tibial vein Dorsal pedal vein*
What veins are present in the hindlimb?
Caudal vena cava Common iliac vein* External/internal iliac vein Femoral vein Popliteal vein Lateral saphenous vein* Medial saphenous vein*
What branches off the femoral vein?
Lateral and medial saphenous veins
What arteries are present in the hindlimb?
Aorta External/internal iliac Femoral Popliteal Saphenous Cranial tibial Dorsal pedal*
What is the femoral triangle?
Space between the sartorius and pectineus muscles on medial side of cranial hindlimb
Where do the arteries lie?
Medially
What is within the femoral triangle?
Femoral nerve, artery and vein
What sites are best for taking the pulse?
Femoral artery
Saphenous artery
What sites are best for taking blood samples?
Lateral saphenous vein
Medial saphenous vein
Femoral vein
Why is the lateral saphenous vein ideal for taking blood?
It is very superficial
Why is the medial saphenous vein good for taking blood?
Long, straight course and a good target
Why is the saphenous artery good for pulse taking?
Very little soft tissue surrounding it
Why is the femoral artery good for pulse taking?
Large and superficial
What nerves are in the hindlimb?
Sciatic Tibial Peroneal Obturator Femoral
What does the obturator nerve do?
Adduction of hind limbs to trunk
What is a common cause for obturator nerve damage in cattle?
Large calves during parturition
What else is damaged along with a sciatic nerve damage?
Peroneal and tibial nerves
When the obturator nerve is damaged what is exhibited with the limb?
Over abduction of the limb
What muscle is affected when the femoral nerve is damaged?
Quadriceps femoris
What is exhibited when the femoral nerve is damaged?
Stifle joint fixed and cannot be extended, no weight bearing on the limb.
What is exhibited when the sciatic nerve is damaged?
Abnormal gait
How is sciatic nerve damage compensated?
Fixation of the stifle joint by the quadriceps femoris
What is paralysed when the peroneal nerve is damaged?
Flexors of the tarsal (unopposed extension) and extensors of the digital joints (unopposed flexion)
