Why’d the Roman Empire split?
Decline in Moral Values, public health declined, government corruption, inflation, unemployment, too much money spent on the military
What were the three roots of medieval culture in Western Europe?
Classical heritage of Rome, Germanic traditions, and belief in Roman Catholic Church
Why was it difficult to have central governments after the Germanic people invaded?
Borders weak, family ties, warriors were only loyal to chiefs and not Kings
Why was the Roman Catholic Church able to have so much power in the M.A?
Not a strong government, Church could excommunicate you, people tithed the Church and they became wealthy
What was the most important thing back then and why?
Land. It meant wealth and power
Why did feudalism emerge, and how’d it work?
Invasions from vikings meant Kings couldn’t protect their land. Peasants, nobles/knights, Lords, and Kings.
Why did feudalism work?
Everyone got what they needed
Where did the Black Death come from?
Gobi Desert, Mongolia
What were some theories of the Black Plague?
Infection of water/wells, Jews poisoned them, punishment from God
