Q
GOALS OF PSYCHOLOGY
A
- Describing behaviour
To answer many psychological questions we need careful descriptions of behaviour
Description, naming and classifying, is typically based on making a detailed record of behavioural observation - Understanding behaviour
If we understand behaviour we can explain its causes - Predicting behaviour
If we can explain and understand the behaviour, we should be able to predict the circumstances in which it will occur again - Controlling behaviour
Control is not necessarily a threat to personal freedom.
If used wisely, it can change negative or unwanted behaviour or avoid accidents
Psychologists can used their knowledge to make changes to influence behaviour
