Q

GOALS OF PSYCHOLOGY

A
  1. Describing behaviour
To answer many psychological questions we need careful descriptions of behaviour
Description, naming and classifying, is typically based on making a detailed record of behavioural observation
  2. Understanding behaviour
If we understand behaviour we can explain its causes
  3. Predicting behaviour
If we can explain and understand the behaviour, we should be able to predict the circumstances in which it will occur again
  4. Controlling behaviour
Control is not necessarily a threat to personal freedom.
If used wisely, it can change negative or unwanted behaviour or avoid accidents
Psychologists can used their knowledge to make changes to influence behaviour
