What do we see through the power of the church?
We see through pilgrimages, crusades and the murder of Beckett

How important was religion?
Religion was very important as people wanted to go to heaven.
The priest was very important and helped with many aspects of life.
People could not read write so doom paintings were important and people paid to the church
What were pilgrimages?
Religious journeys to ask for God’s help
What were crusudes?
Pope Urban II ordered the first crusade in 1095.
* He was worried that the muslims would take over the Holy Land.
* People went on crusades for more reasons than religion - such as gain a ‘papal indulgence’ or to gain wealth.
For 150 years what happened with crusades?
For 150 years the crusaders tried to retake Jerusalem
They were not just fighting but also gained lots of knowledge and products numbers and lemons
What does a pilgrimage often involve?
A pilgrimage involves visiting a significant place which reflects spiritual religious beliefs
What were the crusades?
- series of military campaigns against the Muslims in the middle east
- were 7 major chapter in European med history extending over 3 centuries

Offered indulges to all who vowed to make an armed pilgim to save holy land
What were indulgences?
Papal indulgence during the crusades promised salvation of souls
Militant Christianity?
Knights and fanatical believers of the faith saw the crusade as a religion duty
