Key events that lead to Hitler coming to power in 1933
1919- Hitler joined the DAP.
1920- He turned it into the Nazi party.
1923- Hitler tried to take over the government but failed.
1924- Hitler was sentenced to imprisonment for 5 years, but was behind bars for less than a year.
1924- While in prison, Hitler wrote Mein Kampf.
1924- He only won 32 seats in the Reichstag.
1925- Hitler set up his elite force the SS, or “Blackshirts.”
1928- Only 12 seats in Reichstag. Less than 3% of the population voted for him.
How were women viewed in Nazi Germany?
Hitler thought that the role of women was to have children. Women would receive rewards for having 4, 6 and 8 children, and were trained how to do housework and how to raise children.
How was life like for children in Nazi Germany?
The most important subjects in schools were PE and history, because Hitler wanted boys to be fit so they could join the army, and wanted children to be nationalistic for Germany. Children also had to sit through hours of Nazi indoctrination.
What was the Hitler Youth?
Hitler Youth was an organisation that children would be heavily encouraged to take part in after school. In 1939 it became mandatory.
Teenage men would be taught military drills with live ammunition. Many children enjoyed it, because they got smart uniforms for free, and they were made to feel like they were privileged, as they were the future of Germany.
What evidence is there to support remembering Winston Churchill well?
Churchill encouraged boats to rescue British soldiers on the beaches at Dunkirk. Most were rescued.
He introduced the old age pensions acts and the national insurance act.
What evidence is there against remembering Winston Churchill well?
Churchill was an imperialist, and spoke against Gandhi the same way he spoke about Hitler.
Although technically not illegal, Winston Churchill accepted bribes from oil companies to put their cases forward in parliament, showing that he was happy to undermine a fair system for his own enjoyment.
