Nationalism (pride in their countries, their countries way ‘better’)
Militarism (pride in their armies, spent so much they might as well use it)
Imperialism (countries wanted control of other nations)
Alliances (each country feels threatened, everyone dragged in)
What was the short term reason/trigger for WW1
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
When and where was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand?

When did most people expect the war to be over by?
Christmas (started in June)
What was the Schlieffen Plan?
the German Plan to quickly invade France and then focus on defeating Russia.
What was wrong with the Schieffen plan?
They had to go through Belgium who had a pact with Britain.
When did the Germans put the Schelieffen plan into action?
3rd August 1914
Name main features of WW1 Trench warfare
Duckboards (on ground, stop soldiers from sinking in mud)
Fire step (soldiers stand on and look and fire over)
Dugouts (Rooms dug out of the backwall of the trench)
Periscope (allows to look over without being shot)
Barbed wired (slowed attacking troops)
Artillery (huge guns that fired shells for miles)
Sandbags (reinforces trench walls)
Gas bell (rung to tell troops to put on gas masks)
Who were the ‘Big Three’ in the treaty of versailles?
The leaders of France, Great Britain and USA (most powerful ‘winners’)

Germany must pay £6.6 trillion.
Germany must sign that they started the war
Germany have no airforce or submarines (only small army and navy)
Germany has to hand over colonies to Britain and France
League of Nations set up (international club to aim to stop wars forever)
What was the after-effects of the war on Britain
Britain lost dominion over countries they had previously held and was in desperate need of workers and immigrants to help fill in the population gap

Why was the treaty of versailles considered so brutal?
It left Germany defenceless and placed them in crippling debt. The loss of colonies made Germany lose vital land and give it to the opposition
