when HIV goes untreated
How is HIV transmitted?
unprotected sex
mother to child during pregnancy/ birth
blood/ bodily fluids
How is HIV monitored?
by testing the CD4 count (these cells are destroyed by the virus)
How does HIV present?
initial flu like illness a few weeks after infection
How is HIV treated?
antiretroviral therapy
- tenofovir + emtricitabine
- plus bictefravir
What treatment is given as prophylaxis of HIV if the patient has a low CD4 count? Or if the patient has been exposed to the virus?
low CD4 = co-trimoxazole
exposure = emitricitabine + tenoflovir + rategravir for 28 days
What does HIV increase your risk of?
cardiovascular disease
HPV and cervical cancer
What advice must a GP give to a patient with HIV in relation to vaccines?
only get non-live vaccines
