A
Leader of the Vietnamese independence movement.
• Became President of North Vietnam from 1945 until his death in 1969.

Key Role in Vietnamese History?
A
- French Colonial Period:
• Formed the Indochinese Communist Party (1930) to fight French rule.
• In 1941, set up the Viet Minh, a nationalist and communist group fighting both French and Japanese occupation during WWII. - Declaration of Independence (1945):
• After Japan’s defeat in WWII, Ho declared Vietnam independent (2 September 1945).
• Quoted the US Declaration of Independence, hoping to gain American support — but France returned to reclaim Vietnam → First Indochina War began (1946–1954). - Victory over the French (1954):
• The Viet Minh, led by Ho and General Giap, defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu.
• This led to the Geneva Agreement, dividing Vietnam at the 17th parallel:
• North Vietnam: led by Ho Chi Minh, communist.
• South Vietnam: anti-communist, backed by the USA. - Struggle Against the USA (1955–1969):
• Ho led North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
• Supported the Viet Cong in South Vietnam through the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
• Aimed to unite Vietnam under communist rule.
• Died in 1969, before the war ended, but remains a national hero.

• Seen as a symbol of Vietnamese resistance to foreign domination.
• Highly respected in Vietnam — even Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in 1976.
• Skilled at mixing nationalism with communism to unite people.
• Used propaganda and diplomacy to win support, while keeping the image of a humble leader (he often wore simple clothes).
