Q

Key Role in Vietnamese History?

A
  1. French Colonial Period:
    • Formed the Indochinese Communist Party (1930) to fight French rule.
    • In 1941, set up the Viet Minh, a nationalist and communist group fighting both French and Japanese occupation during WWII.
  2. Declaration of Independence (1945):
    • After Japan’s defeat in WWII, Ho declared Vietnam independent (2 September 1945).
    • Quoted the US Declaration of Independence, hoping to gain American support — but France returned to reclaim Vietnam → First Indochina War began (1946–1954).
  3. Victory over the French (1954):
    • The Viet Minh, led by Ho and General Giap, defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu.
    • This led to the Geneva Agreement, dividing Vietnam at the 17th parallel:
    • North Vietnam: led by Ho Chi Minh, communist.
    • South Vietnam: anti-communist, backed by the USA.
  4. Struggle Against the USA (1955–1969):
    • Ho led North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
    • Supported the Viet Cong in South Vietnam through the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
    • Aimed to unite Vietnam under communist rule.
    • Died in 1969, before the war ended, but remains a national hero.
