What was it?
A secret CIA-led operation run by the USA and South Vietnamese forces.
• Aim: Identify and eliminate Vietcong leaders and supporters in South Vietnam.
• Targeted the Vietcong political structure (not just fighters).
• Often involved interrogation, infiltration, assassinations, and torture.
Aims?

1. Weaken the Vietcong by destroying their political and support networks.
2. Find and kill Vietcong agents, spies, and informers.
3. Use intelligence and undercover operations rather than open battle.
What did it involve?
Arrests, torture, and executions of suspected Vietcong.
• Villages were searched, and anyone suspected could be taken.
• US-trained South Vietnamese police and special forces carried out missions.
• Over 80,000 people were arrested and around 20,000+ killed.
Why was it controversial?

• Torture was widespread in prisons.
