How fast is holderness eroding?
1.8 metres a year
Why is holderness eroding quickly?
Coast made from soft rock called boulder clay - cliffs erode faster - slumping
Narrow beaches mean less protection to the coast so wave power is not reduced
groynes further up the coast means more exposed beaches further down the coast
waves at holderness have a long fetch so energy of waves increased
What are the management strategies at holderness?
Important road at Mapleton led to construction of rock armour and groynes - £2 million
Bridlington has 3.6km sea wall and groynes
Sea wall and groynes at Hornsea, Withernsea
Gas terminal at easington protected by rock armour -£6.6 million
What are the conflicts along the holderness coast
Increased erosion at Great Cowden because of groynes at mappleton because groynes starve beaches of sand - farmland being destroyed

Some sea defenses negatively impact tourism
