homeostasis Flashcards
(4 cards)
homeostasis
the maintenance of a stable but dynamic, physiological state by auto-regulatory processes of the body
the internal enviroment
their needs must be met by a wholly internal environment
cells bathed in fluid: absorbs waste, contains nutrients, provides a relatively stable environment for the cell
control of blood glucose
blood glucose rises to a set point and there is a stimulus for glucagon release diminishes
blood glucose level declines to set point stimulus for insulin release diminishes
examples of negative feedback
temprature
cells must be kept between 0 and 40 degrees
ectothermic animals gain heat from the environmet
require less food than endotherms
lower metabolic rate
do not use energy to maintain body tempreture
no mechanisms for conserving heat
endothermic animals generate heat mainly within the body
require a large quantity of food
have high metabolic rate
use enegry to maintaian body tempreture
detector- hypothalamus and skin
effectors - nervous system and endocrine system
somatic - behavioral
autonomic - shivering
endocrine- adrenaline
