Homeostasis Flashcards
(8 cards)
Homeostasis
the ability of an organism to seek and maintain a stable environment regardless of external factors
control systems
~adjust internal & external changes
~temp, glucose, pH, water
principle of feedback
feedback systems are the mechanisms that maintain homeostasis by returning an environment bac to its tolerance or optimum range.
negative feedback loop
process where your body reverses a change that’s occurring, regulating the body
positive feedback loops
process where your body encourages change, important when rapid change is needed
increased blood glucose
~beta cells secrete insulin
~effects - skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, liver
~glucose uptake by muscle & adipose tissue
~glucose converted to glycogen in the liver (glycogenesis)
decreased blood glucose
~Alpha cells secrete glucagon
~effects - liver cells, body cells
~glycogen stores in the liver break down into glucose (glycogenolysis)
~ reduced use of glucose by most body cells
symptoms of hyperglycaemia
~Increased thirst
~frequent urination
~low energy levels
~extreme hunger
~blurred vision
