hormones Flashcards
(20 cards)
name the 6 endocrine glands?
pituitary gland,thyroid gland,pancreas,testes,adrenal glands and ovaries
what is the function of the pituitary gland?
releases ACTH,FSH,LH and the growth hormone into the bloodstream
what is the effect of thyroxine?
maintains metabolic rate and causes the heart to contract more rapidly
what is a target organ?
organ affected by a hormone that causes a change in what its doing.
what is the metabolic rate?
the rate at which food is transferred into energy
where is the adrenal gland located?
on top of both kidneys
what are the two hormones produced in the pancreas?
glucagon and insulin
what is negative feedback?
a mechanism where changes to conditions cause an action to reverse the change to keep conditions stable
what are hormones?
chemical messengers that carry out messages via the bloodstream to your organs,skin,muscles etc.
what are glands?
an organ of the body/plant that secretes chemical fluids that have various purposes
what hormones are produced in the ovaries?
progesterone,oestrogen
what are the target cells for thyroxine and adrenalin?
heart muscles cells and other
what are the target cells for the growth hormone?
bone cells,other
what are the target cells for insulin?
insulin=liver cells,muscle cells
target cells for LH and FSH?
LH=mature egg follicles
FSH=egg follicles in the ovaries
effect of FSH?
stimulates growth and maturation
effects of LH?
triggers ovulation
effects of glucagon?
increases sugar levels by breaking down into glucose
how should metabolic rate be measured?
when the body is at rest in a warm room and long after the person had a meal
how does adrenalin work?
in exciting situations an increase in impulses from the neurone’s reaching the adrenal gland triggers the release of adrenalin into the bloodstream
