Hormones vs neurotransmitter
Hormones- More for regulating long term functions and help maintain homeostasis.
Neurotransmitters- Act rapidly and locally within the nervous system.
Adrenaline
Hormone.
Arousal, fight or flight response.
Leptin
Hormone.
Produced in fat cells and say “I’m full.”
Counter to ghrelin.
Ghrelin
Hormone.
Produced in the stomach and say “I’m hungry.”
Melatonin
Hormone.
Builds throughout the day and is more effecting when it’s dark, telling you to go to sleep.
Oxytocin
Hormone.
From attachment and bonding, like from for example physical touch.
How are neurotransmitter levels tested?
The levels of a neurotransmitter in the human body is usually tested through urinalysis.
Acetylcholine
Neurotransmitter.
Brain cell functions and muscle contraction.
Dopamine
Neurotransmitter.
Pleasure, satisfaction, and motivation. The reward chemical.
Serotonin
Neurotransmitter.
For mood control and well-being.
Norepinephrine
Neurotransmitter.
Relates to waking up, arousal, and fight or flight.
GABA
Neurotransmitter.
Calms and slows brain functions (like pressing the breaks) and is inhibitory.
Glutamate
Neurotransmitter.
Alertness for cognitive functions (like pressing the gas) and is excitatory.
Endorphins
Neurotransmitter.
Pain-killers that can produce euphoria.
Substance P
Neurotransmitter.
Transmits pain and allows you to feel it.
