Hot and Cold therapy Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is Conduction? Provide 2 examples.
Heat is transferred from warmer to cooler objects.
- Ice/Cold packs
- Electric heating pads
What is convection? Provide an example.
When heat moves via fluids
- Whirlpool baths
What is conversion? Provide 2 examples.
When heat is generated from other energy forms
- Sound
- Electricity
What are 3 Physiological effects of Thermal therapies?
- Increase in collagen tissue extensibility
- Decrease in joint stiffness
- Increase blood flow & lymphatic drainage
What is Thermotherapy?
Where an increase in temperature spreads indirectly through deep tissues, causing an increase in conduction & circulation.
What are the applications of Thermotherapy? (4)
Moist heat packs = silica gel, within a cotton pad, heats up, keeping moist heat for 20- 30 mins. Uses conduction.
Whirlpool = uses conduction and convection
Paraffin = A glove is used to submerge hands using convection.
Contrast bath = increases blood flow (conduction & convection)
What are the physiological effects of Cryotherapy? (4)
- Increased vasoconstriction leading to an increase in blood pressure.
- Increased blood viscosity
- Reduced swelling
- Decreased capillary permeability
Which of the following is better at conduction? Muscles or Fats.
Muscles, fats are poor conductors
What are the 5 Cryotherapy applications?
- Ice massage = rubbing ice in overlapping circles for 5- 10 mins
- Cold/ice water immersion = 10- 15 mins
- Ice bags = used for 15-20mins
- Cryochambers = cry-sleeve/ game-ready equipment
-Vapocoolant Sprays = fluoromethane (reduced spasms & trigger points)
What are 4 contraindications for Cryotherapy?
- Lack of sensation
- Deep-vein thrombosis
- Open/uncovered wounds
- Poor Circulation
What are the 4 contraindications of Thermotherapy?
- Lack of sensation
- Deep-vein thrombosis
- Acute inflammation
- Infections
