How does Rigid/Zinc Oxide taping work?
- Restricts movement depending on how it is applied
- Used for ligament sprains
- Ankle sprains & Plantar fasciitis
- Knee ACL/PCL/MCL/LCL sprains
- Shoulder dislocation/ AC joint sprain
- Elbow hyperextension/ DIP/ PIP joint sprains
- Thumb injuries
What are the uses of Zinc Oxide Taping? (5)
- Aids joint stabilisation
- Reinjury prevention
- Feels good (placebo effect)
- Increases confidence
- Quick to use
What are the tips for the application of Zinc Oxide Taping? (6)
- Ensure the skin is dry (no lotion/moisturiser)
- Attempt to apply to hair-free areas
- Consider joint positioning
- Consider what movement you are aiming to limit
- Avoid creases and check for circulation
- Ask for feedback to make preferential changes

What are the 3 main principles of K-tape?
- Aims to lift the skin and create a small space between the muscles and Dermis layers.
- Creates space for lymphatic drainage and blood flow.
- Decreases pressure around swelling/ injured areas.
What is Kinesiology Tape?
- Supports but does not stabilise
- Massive difference in quality
- Has elastic properties (can be stretched)
- Enhances confidence and helps injured athletes feel better
What are K-tape application tips? (5)
- Apply 30 mins before athletic activity
- Apply ends directly onto the skin
- Set the adhesive by firmly rubbing it
- Consider anatomy (origin & insertion) of muscle locations & lymph nodes
- Ensure the joint is fully bent when applying, and put the muscle in a stretched position.
What are the Precautions and Contraindications of taping?
- Open wounds
- Abrasions/Cuts
- Allergies (Latex etc)
- Inflammatory reaction sites
How long should you keep on Rigid/Zinc oxide Tape?
Less than 24 hours after the performance to allow recovery
- Due to friction and sweat loss during performance, it may become uncomfortable
How long should you keep on Kinesiology Tape?
3-5 days
