What are the hot work procedures for CG personnel? For civilian contractors?

A
  1. Hot work chit signed by the GFE (or civilian Marine Chemist)
  2. Post chit outside the affected space, repair lockers, DCC, and (if underway) the quarterdeck
  3. Notify DCA, EOW, Fire Watch, Fire Marshall, EO, and CO
  4. Post the Fire Watch (Contractors have their own fire watches)

What is a confined space? What are examples of confined spaces?

A
  • spaces with only a single opening
  • spaces with poor ventilation
  • spaces that could contain toxic gases
  • spaces not normally inhabited by humans
    Voids, tanks, paint locker, JP-5, or reefer flats.

Who can stand a fire watch? What equipment do they need and where can you find it?

A

Anyone who is basic DC qual’d
Flash gear, safety toe boots, shade 5 or higher shades (same shade as the actual hot work operator), radio, and H2O extinguisher
Can all be found in the DC shop

What is the procedure for setting the fire watch?

A
  1. Post hot work chit outside the affected space, repair lockers, DCC, and (if underway) the quarterdeck
  2. Ensure fire watch has the proper equipment
  3. Ensure the space is free of flammables and has been cleared of shipboard traffic
  4. Notify the DCA, EOW, and anyone else associated with the space
  5. Post the fire watch
