Functions and Zoning
spaces in a home are organised into different zones according to their functions
3 Basic rules for a good floor plan for zoning
1) all 3 zones should be in the floor zone (worki, private, public)
2) Zones should not be split
3) house members should not cross through the middle of a zone
Private/ quiet zone
bed, bath, dressing room
work zone
areas where work activities take place
kitchen, study, laundry, garage
social/ public zone
spaces where non family members are generally allowed such as living room, games room, dining room, patio/braai
traffic paths
refers to how people move around inside and between rooms
Principles of a traffic path
should be as short as possible
should allow enough space for people to move around safely and feely without wasting space
people should be able to move aroound without distirbing other activities
Orientation
refers to how a house is situated on a plot and the direction which it faces
orientation will affect space planning
good orientation
increases energy efficiency (sustainable), more comfortable to live in, cheaper
uses natural heat of sun and cooler temps of the evening to ensure high standard of liveability.
