How Do Coastal Erosion And Sea Level Change Alter The Physical Characterstics Of CL And Increase Risk Flashcards
(8 cards)
Tsunami/storm surges
Flood low lying coastal plains in flood water but they can have a massive impact on the landscapes, washing away unconsolidated material
Isostatic
Change in land height
Glacial rebound (Isostatic)
As glaciers have melted in the NW of the UK, which were covered in ice sheets 3-4km thick, as they melt, the land starts to expand and readjust cuz the pressure is released off it. However, in the SE of the UK, where there weren’t any heavy glaciers, the rising of the NW caused a falling in land height in the SE
Submergent coastform
Rias= river valleys and estuaries r flooded by rising eustatic sea levels
Fjords= glacial valleys r flooded
Dalmatian
Dis of human management
Can slow down coastal recession but can speed it up elsewhere cuz if u do one intervention within a sediment or coastal system, this will have an impact further else along it
How r humans contributing to RSL
Increasing pop and econmic activity in coasts, more people r living on the flat coastal plains which r marginal lands, the protection and magament can be increasing risk or reducing risk as levels of development have increased in coastal locations, therefore when recession occurs it is likely to increase econmic losses
Low lying atolls at risk
Tuvalu, Maldives- climate refugees will move to mainland countries e.g. NZ
Why are development unequal
Developed nations like Holland can put prevention in place whereas Bangladesh can’t
