How do the developmental studies (4) link to the area? Flashcards
(4 cards)
Bandura- Transmission of aggression- External influences on children’s behaviour
Falls into developmental area because it is investigating how environment around a child (particularly in terms of adult behaviours they see & hear) can affect the behaviour they end up adopting themselves.
Behaviourist perspective illustrated as Bandura believed all behaviour was learned and Social learning theory suggested new way in which this can happen beyond ways suggested in classical and operant conditioning (he developed SLT theory alongside his research).
Explains how children learn to be aggressive as they grow older through exposure to social learning processes- Children observe models’ behaviour then later imitate.
Chaney- Funhaler- External influences on children’s behaviour
Falls into this area as it is illustrating ways external influences can influence behaviour through ways in which children learn and how parents help their children acquire desired behaviours- positive reinforcement.
Looked at how behaviour can be learned through use of rewards.
Funhaler was rewarding to use- increased parents & child compliance.
Kohlberg- Stages of moral development- Moral development
Developmental because is investigating how, as people get older, the nature of their moral thinking can be seen to evolve, potentially passing through 6 distinct stages of moral development.
Is suggesting this occurs in line with cognitive development, occurs irrespective of the culture a person is growing up in.
Lee et al- Evaluations of lying & truth-telling- Moral development
Cross-cultural study- challenges Kohlberg’s suggesting that development of moral thinking is unaffected by culture a child grows up in.
Lee showed impact of culture through Chinese & Canadian children’s evaluations of lying & truth-telling.
Cross-sectional approach contrasts nicely with Kohlberg’s longitudinal approach.
