HUMAN BODY Flashcards
(31 cards)
Define the term anatomy
The study of structure of the body & the relation of its parts to each other
Define the term physiology
The scientific study of the functions of the body or its parts
The six levels of organisation in order?
- Chemical level
- Cellular level
- Tissue level
- Organ level
- System level
- Organismal level
What does the muscular system do?
Helps the body move
What does the urinary system do?
Produces, stores and eliminates urine
What does the reproductive system do?
Enables us to reproduce
What does the digestive system do?
Physical and chemical breakdown of food
What does the endocrine system do?
Regulates body activities through hormones
What does the respiratory system do?
Carries oxygen and nutrients to our cells and takes carbon dioxide and waste away from cells
What does the lymphatic system do?
Returns proteins and fluid to blood often related to immunity
What does the Integumentary system do?
Regulates body temperature and protects the body
What does the nervous system do?
Send messages through the body
What does the cardiovascular system do?
Transfers oxygen we breathe into our blood and carbon dioxide from our blood to exhale air
What does the skeletal system do?
Support and protect the body
What is Anterior position?
Nearer to the front of the body
What is posterior position?
Nearer to the back of the body
What is superior position?
Towards the head
What is inferior position?
Away from the head
Why is anatomical positioning important?
To increase accuracy and clarity and to avoid confusion and misunderstanding
What is lateral position?
Further from the midline
What is medial position?
Nearer to the midline
What is proximal position (use on limbs only)?
Nearer to the point of attachment of a limb to the trunk
What is distal position (used on limbs only)?
Further from the point of attachment of a limb to the trunk
What is superficial position?
Towards or on the surface of the body
