Skeletal system and joints Flashcards
Define ligament?
Fibrous connective tissue that connects bones to other bones
Define tendon
A tough band of fibre is connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
Define cartilage
It covers and protects the end of long bones at the joint it is also part of some of our body parts
What is a fibrous joint?
An immovable joint
What is a cartilaginous joint?
A slightly moveable joint
What is a synovial joint?
A freely moveable joint where bones are held together by ligaments
What is a ball and socket joint
Ball Like surface of one bone fitting into a cup like depression of another button
What is a Hinge joint?
Produces an opening closing motion like that of a hinged door
What’s flexion?
Decrease in the angle between articulating bones
What’s extension?
Increase in the angle in articulating bones
What’s hyperextension
Continuation of extension beyond the normal extension
What abduction
Movement of a bone away from the midline
What’s adduction
Movement of a bone towards the midline
What’s circumduction
Movement of a body part in a circle
What’s rotation
A bone revolves around its own longitudinal axis
What’s dorsiflexion?
Bending of the foot at the ankle in an upward direction
What’s plantar flexion
Bending of the foot at the ankle in a downward direction
What’s supination
Movement of the forearm so that the palm is turned upward
What is pronation
Movement of the forearm so that the pump is turned downward
4 functions of bones and the skeletal system?
- Support
- Protection
- Assistance in movement
- Blood cell production
How many bones in the human body ?
206
Define axial skeleton?
Consist of the bones that lie around the longitudinal axis of the body
Define appendicular skeleton
Consist of the bones of the upper and lower limbs plus the bones forming the girdles that connect the limbs to the axial skeleton
Name the five types of bones
- Long
- Short
- Flat
- Irregular
- Sesamoid
