Human Body Flashcards
(23 cards)
Plasma
Plasma is 90% water and it is what carries blood around our body
Haemoglobin
Red pigment that contains iron. Located in red blood cells it carries oxygen
Septum
The heart is a double pump separated into the left and right side by the septum
Aorta
Oxygenated blood leaves the heart to go to the rest of the body
Venae Cavae
Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium of the heart through the venae cavae
Atria
the upper chambers of the heart, where blood first enters the heart
Ventricles
the lower chambers of the heart where blood goes when it leaves the atria.
Pulmonary artery
brings deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart.
Valves
Gateways that open and close to let blood flow through the heart, and stop backflow in the veins.
Pulse
A wave of vibrations that passes through an artery in response to blood being forced out of the left ventricle.
Oxygenated blood
Blood rich in oxygen that comes from the lungs.
Deoxygenated blood
Blood that comes from other parts of the body that has less oxygenated , and more carbon dioxide. It must go to the lungs to get more oxygen.
Healthy heart
A balanced diet, exercise and rest are very important for a healthy heart.
Ncreased
surface area to allow food to be absorbed into the bloodstrea. PancreasIngestion: the food is taken into the mouth
Digestion
the food is broken down into simpler, absorbable molecules
Absorption
the absorbable molecules are passed into the blood and carried to all of the cells of the body
Assimilation
the food is used by the body for energy and to build new cells
Egestion
undigested food material is released from the digestive system as faeces
Villi
small fingerlike projections that cover the small intestines. They provide an increased surface area to allow food to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
oesophagus
carries food to the stomach.
stomach
The stomach mixes and churns the food. This is more physical digestion.
small intestine.
Nutrients from the food are absorbed into the blood
The liver
produces a green liquid called bile.
•Bile is stored in the gall bladder, from where it is passed into the small intestine.
•Bile helps digest fats.
