SI units
To make sure everybody in the world can understand each other there is an agreed unit of measurement called SI units (system international)
Length
Instrument metre stick unit metre
Time
Instrument stopwatch unit second
Volume of a liquid
Instrument graduated cylinder unit metre cubed
Temperature
Instrument thermometer unit kelvin degrees Celsius
Force
Instrument Newton metre unit newton
Measuring length what would you use
A metre stick or ruler
Opisometre
An opisometre can be used to measure short curved lines for example a road or a river on a map
Trundle wheel
Used to measure long curved lengths for example a flower bed.
Vernier calipers
To find the diameter or width of a solid object for example marble or a piece of piping.
Measuring area
To get the area multiply the length by the width
Mass
Is the amount of mattter in an object it is measured in the lab by using an electronic balance usually mesured in kg or g
Irregular area
Your hand or leaf do not have a regular shape to get the area of an irregular object trace it into a graph on paper and count on how many squares it covers.
Volume
Volume tells us how much space something takes up it is mesured in m3 or cm3,ml or liters) for a regular object such as a cardboard box volume = length x width x height
Volume of irregular objects
We can mesure the volume of irregular object by using a graduated cylinder or an overflow can.
